Notes From Elsewhere

CAMPBELL, Major Walter; FORESTER, Frank (ed.)
The Old Forest Ranger; Or, Wild Sports of India on The Neilgherry Hills, In the Jungles, and on the Plains
New York: Stringer & Townsend, 1853. First American edition. Octavo (21 cm). Green, gilt-stamped cloth; top edge gilt; 383 pp.; engraved half-title page; five engravings. Major Campbell's account of his hunting expeditions in India was first published in the pages of the London "New Monthly Magazine," and is a "veritable romance of sporting, in the lands which are the birth place of the most gorgeous, the most fascinating of all romances - the seat of a yet unextinguished, barbarous and barbaric civilization, older it is probable than the Pyramids, coeval, at least, with the winged bulls and lions, the eagle-headed gods, and sensuous worship of disinterred Nineveh." Cloth is rubbed with gilt dulling; ink stain near edge of front board; owner's name to front endpaper and title page; bookseller's embossed stamp to ffep; foxing throughout. A Good, complete copy of the first American edition
