From the Argus (Melbourne, Victoria) Sat. 10th December 1881: A letter was also received signed Count Lubawsky, and stating that the writer was decorated with 560 medals, and member of 1,286 scientific societies, and sought election as a member of the Royal Society of Victoria, As the writer was not nominated by a member of the society the request had to be declined<br />A MODEL NOBLEMAN.--The Melbourne Age of 12th inst, says,-Much merriment was caused at a meeting of the council of the National Agricultural Society yesterday by an extrarodinary letter,received from a person in Russia, signing himself Count Alexander Lubawski. The following is a copy of the document :-"I desire to become a member of this society. 'My<br />titles are printed above, and I would like you to examine them. 1 am a writer of rural agriculture, and of monographs on<br />judicial studies. I am author of projects say, 1st. For the introduction of the registration of lands in Russia (the registration<br />of lands does not exist there). 2nd, To establish a new science of agricultural statistics. 3rd. To convene the first congress<br />for horticulture. I am a member of forty agricultural societies in St. Petersburg, Moscow, &c. I send herewith my portrait,<br />covered with decorations. The following address, in French, must be written on the letter sent to me;-"Count Lubawski,<br />Ville de Viazma, Province do Smolensk, Russia." I have just been made a Count of Thessaly by H.R.H. the Prince of<br />Snnderburg, and also 'Count of the Saint Siege. In consideration of the above I humbly beg - 1st to analyse my titles<br />(printed); 2nd, to introduce my name as a member of the Agricultural Society of Melbourne in the following style: 'Sir Earl<br />Alexander de Lubawski, a nobleman of Russia, counsellor of State, Knight Grand Cross, member of 335 societies.' Signed,<br />Count Alexander de Lubawski." The council were not moved by the recital of all these extraodinary dignities, and determined not to accede to the request contained in the letter. A vote of thanks was accorded to the Russian consul for translating it into English. The photograph of the Count showed that he was decorated with about thirty medals.
