From the Argus (Melbourne, Victoria) Sat. 10th December 1881: A letter was also received signed Count Lubawsky, and stating that the writer was decorated with 560 medals, and member of 1,286 scientific societies, and sought election as a member of the Royal Society of Victoria, As the writer was not nominated by a member of the society the request had to be declined
A MODEL NOBLEMAN.--The Melbourne Age of 12th inst, says,-Much merriment was caused at a meeting of the council of the National Agricultural Society yesterday by an extrarodinary letter, received from a person in Russia, signing himself Count Alexander Lubawski. The following is a copy of the document :-"I desire to become a member of this society. 'My
titles are printed above, and I would like you to examine them. 1 am a writer of rural agriculture, and of monographs on
judicial studies. I am author of projects say, 1st. For the introduction of the registration of lands in Russia (the registration
of lands does not exist there). 2nd, To establish a new science of agricultural statistics. 3rd. To convene the first congress
for horticulture. I am a member of forty agricultural societies in St. Petersburg, Moscow, &c. I send herewith my portrait,
covered with decorations. The following address, in French, must be written on the letter sent to me;-"Count Lubawski,
Ville de Viazma, Province do Smolensk, Russia." I have just been made a Count of Thessaly by H.R.H. the Prince of
Snnderburg, and also 'Count of the Saint Siege. In consideration of the above I humbly beg - 1st to analyse my titles
(printed); 2nd, to introduce my name as a member of the Agricultural Society of Melbourne in the following style: 'Sir Earl
Alexander de Lubawski, a nobleman of Russia, counsellor of State, Knight Grand Cross, member of 335 societies.' Signed,
Count Alexander de Lubawski." The council were not moved by the recital of all these extraodinary dignities, and determined not to accede to the request contained in the letter. A vote of thanks was accorded to the Russian consul for translating it into English. The photograph of the Count showed that he was decorated with about thirty medals.
