Obit. in BMJ
an army surgeon. He studied medicine at Trinity College, Dublin and became MRCS (Eng.) in 1854. On qualifying, he joined the army medical corps and was at the siege of Sebastopol (1854). He was 'mentioned in dispatches' for his bravery as a field surgeon (1855). He served in Bengal during the 'Mutiny' (1857-1859) before being posted to Mauritius (1860-1865). He was in Madagascar (1861) as part of the embassy of Colonel Middleton from the Governor of Mauritius to the new king, Radama I. He volunteered for Abyssinia (Ethiopia)(1867) and was put in charge of the hospital ship Golden Fleece. He left the army (1882) to take a diploma and eventually retired to his native Ireland (1892). His collection of bird specimens is now in the National Museum of Ireland
