John Gunn, Geologist & Rector of Irstead and Barton Turf, Norfolk
Identified by inscription au verso, this CDV depicts the Rev. John Gunn, Fellow of the Geological Society of London & Rector of Irstead, Norfolk. He was born on 9th October 1801, the son of Rev. William Gunn & his wife Ann Gunn née Mack. Following his mother's death in 1828, his father resigned and John took over the parish of Irstead & Barton Turf in 1829. He married Harriet Turner on 27th April 1830 and became brother-in-law to the botanist Sir W. J. Hooker & the antiquarian Sir Francis Palgrave; following Harriet's death in 1864, his second wife became Eliza Moore, whom he married at Norwich in 1872. From about 1850 until his own death on 28th May 1890, John Gunn devoted his life to the study of geology, making a number of significant contributions to the science. His career as a clergyman, however, ceased in 1869 when, after 40 years service, he resigned over conscientious difficulties with current Church doctrines.
