In 1899 William's son Frederic married Mildred Ommanney, the second daughter of senior agent Sir Montagu Ommanney. The father-and-son partnership in Shelford & Son was thus established in the same year that Queen's Magazine announced that an 'interesting marriage had been arranged' between the two upper-class families. In the case of Shelford & son 'strong ties' of kinship underpinned the bonds in the consultancy as well as their imperial connections. These ties served the Shelfords as well. Over the following years, the company enjoyed the full support of the Crown Agents and of the Colonial Office where Frederic Shelford's father-in-law, Sir Ommanney, was elevated to the high position of permanent under-secretary in 1901. .... scheming relationship characterized by outright nepotism, in particular after Frederic Shelford joined the family business and took over from his ageing and feeble father. The projected railways in West Africa to which Shelford was consultant ran into constant delays .... Frederic Shelford's engineering skills .. very poor [British Engineers and Africa 1875-1914; Casper Andersen]
