Notes From Elsewhere

I am descended from a Scottish Merchant (Alexander Walker) and his mistress from Sierra Leone (Judith Catherine Jarrett) their three children were bought to Preston Mill, Kirkbean, to be educated. They appear on the 1861 census aged 8, 6, and 4.

The eldest became a farmer at Irongray (Walter Quin Walker) the middle child died in his teens (Alexander Allan Walker) and the youngest my great grandfather, (Robert Gustave Walker) became a Chief Engineer for the Elder Dempster shipping line. I don't think even my grand father (Allen Alexander Walker) knew his father was born in Sierra Leone.

Like you, I believe there were probably many other merchants, sailors etc who bought home wives, and children from many other counties they visited. Within just one generation you could not look at them and tell from which country them came.

I am missing four daughters of Robert Gustave Walker who it is believed emigrated probably to U.S.A. at the turn of the century 1900's, Margaret Walker, Jane Walker, Helen Alice Walker and Agnes Catherine Walker. Would love to hear from anyone with any connections to them.

ALEXANDER WALKER (Merchant & One time Chief Superintendent of Police in Freetown)

b. 4.6.1824 in London.
