When he joined Anthropological Society of London he was at Madras (Chennai), India. Possibly the author of several books on various subjects including fly-fishing, life after death, and the empire.

He studied at the London Veterinary School – now ‘Royal Veterinary College’, and qualified 30 April 1856.
