Henry Muirhead (1814-1890) was a physician who left funds to found and maintain "an institution for the instruction of women in physical and biological sciences... The women students to receive an education to fit them to become medical practitioners, dentists, electricians, chemists etc...". Muirhead's trustees were unable to carry out his request for various reasons, but in 1911 his trustees endowed the University's Muirhead Chair of Medicine; the Muirhead Chair of Obstetrics and Gynaecology; the St Mungo Chair of Surgery and the St Mungo-Notman Chair of Pathology.
Muirhead graduated MD from the University in 1844 and became the proprietor and the resident physician of Longdales Asylum for Lunatics in Bothwell. He was President of the Philosophical Society of Glasgow, endowed the Muirhead Demonstratorship in Physiology in 1877, and was awarded an LLD by the University in 1886.
