He was one of the first Europeans to study Maya ruins.<br /><br />Born Lower Norwood, Surrey; died Fownhope, Herefordshire. Held various colonial posts in Caribbean and Pacific. His collections from them led to founding of the University Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology, Cambridge. Best known for his work in Central America. His Mayan collections are mainly in the British Museum. Honorary degrees from Oxford and Cambridge<br />
