Formed as one company at Birtley with Captain Edward M. Perkins, Lieutenant Augustus H. Hunt and Ensign Isaac L. Bell commissioned on 17 August 1860. Joined the 1st Admin Battalion. No. 2 Company was later formed at Washington. Cecame 'F' and 'G' Companies of the new 4th Corps in 1880. Birtley, five miles south-east of Gateshead, had coal pits and ironworks, as did Washington - Sir Thomas Bell was the great iron master there - just to the east<br /><br />Notice is hereby given, that the Partnership heretofore existing between us in the trade or business of Iron Masters and Coal Owners, under the name and style of the Birtley Iron Company, was this day dissolved by mutual consent, so far as regards the undersigned, Charles Frederick Perkins. — Dated this 24th day of March, 1858. <br />Charles Fredk. The cottages bear the initials and family crest of Augustus Henry Hunt and are locally listed. Birtley House stands to the west although the majority of the wooded area has been removed. Two schools have been constructed (on the land between the Queen’s Head and St. Johns Church). Housing has increased in the surrounding area.<br /><br /><br />
