[the Tablet 12 Aug. 1882]: OPENING OF A CATHOLIC INSTITUTE IN BISHOP AUCKLAND.— An institute, to which is attached reading-room, games-room, lecture hall, &c., was opened on Monday last with a concert in St. Wilfrid's Schools. The building is situate in the most central part of the town—Great Gates—and in the midst of a thickly populated district. After the entertainment the Rev. J. M. Crolly delivered an address, and in a forcible manner pointed out the great influence such institutions had, intellectually and morally, over the community at large. The cry most general in this country at the present time is one of education, although he (the speaker) would not say it is as sincere as it is loud and deep.
