Tate, George Ralph (1835-1874)
George Tate was born at Alnwick and attended the University of Edinburgh, studying medicine. He earned an award in botany in 1853 and qualified MD a few years later. He went on to enter the forces as assistant surgeon in the Royal Artillery, which saw Tate stationed in Hong Kong for two years. Here his interest in botany resurfaced and he collected plants during an excursion into the interior of the country which lasted some months. This collection of about 800 plants was deposited in the herbarium at Kew Gardens. Returning from China, Tate was posted to the Isle of Wight and was made a Fellow of the Linnean Society in 1869. He died at Fareham, Hampshire, in 1974. The species Plectranthus tatei Hemsl., which Tate discovered, was named in his honour.
