Nicolaas Jacobus van Warmelo , born in Pretoria on January 28, 1904, died in 1989, is a South African linguist , anthropologist and ethnologist .
NJ van Warmelo was born on January 28, 1904 in Pretoria and is the only son of Willem van Warmelo, director of the hydrography section [De quoi?] . He graduated in 1921 at the Oosteind Hoërskool and graduated in classical language at the University of Stellenbosch . He studied at the Seminar for Afrikanische Sprachen at the University of Hamburg from 1925 to 1928, graduated in 1927 and taught in 1928. In 1929, van Warmelo was the director of the black language department at the University of the Witwatersrand .
He became a state ethnologist on March 7, 1930, and held this position until his retirement in 1969, but continued to hold a temporary position working on unfinished research projects.
