Haddon. Anthropological expedition to Torres Straits: In 1890 John Bruce somewhat unwillingly was persuaded by the Government Resident, the Hon. John Douglas, to become the Government teacher and representative of the Government for three years; at the end of the period he wanted to resign but was induced to continue and for thirty years longer he was the beloved and respected 'Baba' (Father) of the Murray Islands. He was allowed to retire at the end of 1923. He settled in Sydney and died on December 24, 1928, aged 80 years.
It is difficult to overrate the beneficent influence that 'Jack' exercised over the Miriam. He was consulted by the natives in all their difficulties, and no other person has had so intimate an acquaintance with the joys and sorrows of their daily life or so true an appreciation of their needs ...
