In high school, is particularly interested in science and had a large collection of plants, while studying medicine but it has attracted osteološka collection, especially the many and various skull, which was crucial for his policies. Due to nesistematike and racial prejudices, who ruled in this area by colleagues tried to dissuade them from Antrop. research, but the W. started working systematically, on an extensive material and simple methods. To help him was also military service because he had great opportunities to collect anthropological data by examining and measuring the recruits. He has dealt with a medical with the physical and historical anthropology. In winter 1867/8 was the first lectured on anthropology college Vienna. University.
In the service of Vienna published the first results of its survey forms the skull and pelvis: Beiträge zur Kenntnis der Schädelformen österr. Völker (Mitt. D. Between. Jb. D. Ges. D. Arzt, Vienna 1864 and 1867), Die Becken österr. Völker (ib., 1866), Vier aus alten Schade Grabstätten and Böhmen (Archiv f. Anthropologie, Brunswick, 1867). - Relocation to Istanbul was happy to accept, because it is expected that explored different people. However, the first criteria can only bones of Muhammadan cemeteries (because they have the wizard) and wrote a clean medical articles on the brain and the skull, for example .: Der Wassergehalt nach der Gehirne Alter, Geschlecht und Krankheiten (Med. Jb. D. Ges. d. Arzt, Vienna, 1868), Gehirngewicht, Kapazitet und des Umfang Schädels (ib., 1869), Die supraorbitalwindungen des menschlichen Gehirnes (ib., 1870). Only after long persuasion can be started with measurements of living persons and in 1873 first reported on the form of skulls Turks Die Schädelformen der Turk (Mitt. D. Anthropi. Ges., Vienna), 1874 is the form of skulls Slavs Bemerkungen über Slavenschädel (ZFT f. Ethnologie , Berlin). Firstly, people of different nationalities classified by body dimensions and thus shed light on the relationship, in which the racial mix, in part Körpermessungen verschiedener Menschenrassen (Berlin 1878). The most in-depth study and managed to Die Serbokroaten der adriatischen Küstenländer (ib. 1884); describes the racial characteristics of our people from Dalmatia, Cro. and Istria. The most important rule in this area are: Vorschlag für ein einheitliches Messverfahren lebender Menschen (Mitt. D. Anthropi. Ges., 1889), Die Deutschen Niederösterreichs (Vienna 1892), Die Bosnier (Mitt. D. Anthropi. Ges., 1895) , Prähistorische Schad von Glasinac (Wissen. Mitt. aus Bosnien und Herzegovina, Vienna, 1897), Die Slovenia (Mitt. d. anthropi. Ges., 1903 shortened obj. MMK 1904), Die Serbokroaten Kroatiens und Slavoniens (ib., 1905), Die Schädelformen der Slovenia (ib., 1912). For us, the most important discussion that dealt with the Slovenians. Height and length and width of the head is measured at 2481 Slovene. recruits aged 21-25 years, and they also set the color of the skin, hair and eyes. Slovenes was ranked according to the phone. the amount of medium to large (minimum of Kranjska are the highest in the Littoral provinces), the color of hair, eyes and skin by a quarter of one of the bright, slightly less during the dark, while the rest of mixed types, according to the head among the brachiopods. This finding his posture today, of course, taking into account the secular trend (of acceleration), which applies in particular to tel. height.
W-'s findings have attracted much attention of scientists and stimulated a lively debate among the most famous kraniologi of the era (eg. J. Engel, H. Virchow). Because he had been among the first, to our territory even the first to have dealt with the systematic anthropological research. His methods of measurement used today, some unchanged (eg. Measuring the height of the upper and lower part of the face with a floating caliper, see Rudolf Martin and Karl Saller, Lehrbuch d. Anthropologie, Jena, I 1928, 184, 190), and some of minor amendments. The importance of his research lies in the fact that a number of measurements of the persons and classifying their characteristics (eg. Color of skin, hair and eyes) came to the conclusion that helped eliminate racial prejudices, because the characteristics of certain groups of people (race) made on a scientific basis.
