Editor of the Institute's Journal 1896-7; Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries (q.v.), 1899; Fellow, British Academy, 1922.

Born Cardiff; died Holford, Somerset. Entered British Museum in 1895, working under A.W. Franks. Initial interest in ethnology but changed to archaeology. Keeper of British and Medieval Antiquities 1921-8. Numerous publications.

Author of the following reports and catalogues: 'Report on Ethnographic Museums in Germany' (HMSO 1898, where he commended the role of German government agents in the development of their national collection); 'Antiquities from the City of Benin and From Other Parts of West Africa in the British Museum' (jointly with Charles Hercules Read (q.v.), 1899); 'Catalogue of Early Christian Antiquities and Objects from the Christian East' (1901); 'Guide to Early Christian and Byzantine Antiquities' (1903); 'Catalogue to the Ivory Carvings of the Christian Era' (1909); 'Handbook to the Ethnographical Collections' (1910); 'Catalogue of Finger Rings' (1912); 'Catalogue of Engraved Gems of Post-Classical Periods' (1915); 'Guide to Medieval Antiquities and Objects of Later Date' (1924); 'The treasure of the Oxus with other examples of early oriental metal-work'. Also author of a number of other books, including 'East Christian art: a survey of the monuments' (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1925).
