1883.11.27 A letter was read from Mr A. Giles Puller expressing regret that under circumstances there explained he is not in a position to continue his subscriptions to the Anthropological Institute, and requesting in consequence that his name be removed.

It was resolved that in consideration of Mr Puller’s membership since 1865 and of the circumstances that have induced him to wish to withdraw, he be informed that the Council are prepared to retain his name in the list of Members without requiring the payment of further subscriptions.

Away from chess, Puller was responsible for erecting monuments to those people who played a part in abolishing the slave trade in England in the 19th century. A picture of the unveiling of the plaque for Thomas Clarkson in 1879 can be seen here:
Wade Mill Memorial to Thomas Clarkson in 1879. n 1833, Basil Montague asked Thomas Clarkson to show a party of abolitionists, the exact spot where he decided to dedicate his life to ending slavery. A young Charles Merivale went with them. Years later he became Dean of Ely and told his story to Arthur Giles Puller, of Youngsbury, who offered to help him fulfil his promise to mark the spot. Charles Merivale unveiled the monument on 8th October, 1879. [site has photo with puller's name visible on monument]
