Son of a doctor, born in Scotland. Assistant surgeon in Royal Navy 1859. Went to New Zealand on HMS Curacao and awarded Victoria Cross. Worked on hospital ships and on HMS Pearl in Australia in 1873. Honorary physician to Queen Victoria, Edward VII and George V. Died in Eastbourne, Sussex.
