Both Bryce McMurdo Wright, Jr, and his father were mineralogists and experts in precious stones. The father, Bryce McMurdo Wright, Sr (1814-1875) was born in Dumfries and died in London.
Bryce McMurdo Wright worked as a dealer in geological and mineralogical specimens. In a letter on 12 July 1883 Wright wrote to Whistler requesting a copy of a private circular about Charles Augustus 'Owl' Howell. It is not known why he knew Howell. At this time Bryce McMurdo Wright was living at 204 Regent Street, London.
