Lady Vera Delves Broughton (1894–1968) was one of the earliest woman photographers in the ethnographic field - achievements which have often been overlooked. She is more often associated with the ‘scandalous’ high-society set of pre-World War 2 British colonial Kenya. In 1935 Broughton deserted her husband Sir Jock (Henry John) Delves Broughton for Walter Guinness, first Baron (Lord) Moyne (q.v.) with whom she travelled extensively around south-east Asia, the Pacific islands, Greenland and the Bay Islands off the coast of Honduras. Her photographs were used to illustrate Moyne’s books – Walkabout (1936) and Atlantic Circle (1938).
