Dr Peter Comrie (1832-1882) was a British naval surgeon who collected the holotype [bird] while serving on board HMS Basilisk (1871-1875). He collected widely including fauna, flora and anthropological artifacts. He was tried on five counts before a court-martial for insubordination (1875) and, three being proven, forfeited three years of seniority and was discharged.

Dr. Peter Comrie, Staff-Surgeon R.N., exhibited the zoological specimens which he had collected during the survey of the S.E.
coast of New Guinea by H.M.S. ' Basilisk,' and read the following remarks : ...
Royal Navy surgeon, collected natural history
specimens and anthropological data whilst on voyage
to New Guinea in 1874 on HMS Basilisk
Donated a collection of Native American items to the Museum [BM] in 1870. Also donated Oceanic material, in total donated 167 objects. He was surgeon on the Sparrowhawk 1865-8, under Cdr Edwin A Porcher. Was surgeon on the HMS Basilisk, under Captain John Moresby, between 1873 to 1874 on the voyage to New Guinea (Beran page 193 in Craig and Beran eds., 2005, Shields of Melanesia).
