Notes From Elsewhere
James Richardson Logan (b.1819, April 10, Berwickshire, Scotland - d.1869, October 20, Penang, Malaya) was the founder and editor of the Journal of the Indian Archipelago and Eastern Asia. He was also among those who advocated freedom from Indian rule, which resulted in the historic transfer of the Straits Settlements to the Colonial Office in 1867...
As a lawyer, he was known for supporting the rights of natives, such as the Indian sireh planter and Chinese clan associations. After a fall out with parties at Penang, Logan proceeded to Singapore in 1843, joining his brother who had arrived there a year earlier, and was practising law and residing with John Thomson.
