Francisco M. Salzano is Emeritus Professor of Genetics at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul in Porto Alegre, Brazil, and is one of the most eminent geneticists in Latin America working in the field of anthropology. While his main scientific interest is in human population genetics, his research also covers medical, animal and plant genetics. He has previously published a number of influential works in both English and Portuguese and has received several awards including the Almirante Alvaro Alberto National Prize and the Franz Boas High Achievement Award of the Human Biology Association.

Professor Emeritus and Collaborator in the Department of Genetics of the Institute of Biosciences of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul and member of the Permanent Nucleus of the Postgraduate Program in Genetics and Molecular Biology .
Salzano has already received several honors. In 1994, the Brazilian government granted him the highest national distinction for scientists, the Almirante Álvaro Alberto Award for Science and Technology. He also received the Grand Cross Award from the National Order of Scientific Merit - President of the Republic of Brazil - June 1995. In 1997 and 1999 he received the "Annual Award" and the "Franz Boas High Achievement Award" from the Ibero-American Society of Human Genetics and the Human Biology Association respectively. More recently, the title of Doctor Honoris Causa, Paul Sabatier University (Toulouse III), France / 2010. He has also received another 20 awards. He is a foreign member of the National Academy of Science of the United States since 1999 and of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences since 1973. [ 2 ]

It has more than 449 complete articles published in international indexed journals, and 117 general and scientific articles. Only in this year of 2010 he is cited as author / coauthor of 21 papers. He wrote 18 books and 52 book chapters. Among the books include "The Evolution and Genetics of Latin American Populations" (2002; Cambridge University Press) [ 4 ] in collaboration with the researcher and colleague of department Maria Cátira Bortolini , and the book "South American Indians: A case study in Evolution "(1988; Clarendon Press) [ 5 ] in collaboration with the researcher and colleague Sídia Maria Calegari-Jacques . So far, it has contributed to the formation of 44 doctors and 43 masters. [ 6
