This portrait was presented to the sitter, the late Lieutenant-Colonel of the Dumfriesshire Volunteers on 27th December 1907, 'On the completion of his 90th year, in recognition of a life of public usefulness and philanthropy, and as a mark of esteem by his friends in, and associated with, Eskdale.'.
