He was educated at Edinburgh University, where he took his degree of M.D. in 1853. In 1854 he emigrated to New South Wales, in the first Legislative Council of which he represented Port Philip, later rising to the position of Speaker, which he held for eleven years. In 1858 he became a Fellow of the Ethnological Society, and, after the formation of the Anthropological Institute, he was a contributor to the Journal. Among his other works were various official papers and reports, besides articles which appeared in the Transactions of the Royal Society of Literature, of which Society he was Vice-President. |
