Philipp Alexander Ferdinand Walther (born December 25, 1812 in Darmstadt , † May 26, 1887 in Darmstadt ) was a German historian and librarian .
Philipp Alexander Ferdinand Walther was born in Darmstadt in 1812, the son of museum inspector Wilhelm Walther and his wife Helene Stritter. He attended the Ludwig-Georgs-Gymnasium in his hometown and then studied theology at the University of Giessen . During his studies in 1830 he became a member of the Old Giessen fraternity Germania . In 1833 he became a private tutor with an English family, whom he also accompanied on trips through Europe.
He renounced a pastor position and entered in 1835 a job as assistant to the court library in Darmstadt. There he became a secretary in 1836 and finally in 1850 a librarian .
After the death of Johann Wilhelm Mitzenius (1800-1873) he became his successor in February 1873 as director of the court library. He held this position until his retirement in October 1885.
In 1841 he became the Dr. phil. PhD.
Walther was since 1840 the board of the then founded under his suggestion Kabinetsmuseum and the Cabinet Library. Walther focused mainly on the field of Hessian history. For this he wrote numerous writings.
Philipp Alexander Ferdinand Walther died in May 1887 in Darmstadt. He was born in 1839 with Johanna Jacobea Auguste. Küchler (1821-1871) married. The marriage produced three daughters and a son.
