Cross was a Fellow of the Geological Society (elected 1906) and an active collector of Palaeolithic material in Kent. His death is recorded in the Proceedings of the Geological Society for 1918, and in the same year William Johnson Sollas, Professor of Geology at Oxford, purchased a collection of artefacts from the Cross Collection, half of which he resold to the PRM (90 artefacts).
