Pendleton Alum Works in Salford, on the western suburbs of Manchester in Lancashire. The owner of this factory, Peter Spence, had been brought to court on the charge of ‘conducting an unacceptable nuisance at Pendleton’. Spence manufactured alum for the printing and dyeing industries but the factory had been emitting toxic waste products such as hydrogen sulphide and sulphuric acid.
