Sir Charles Nicholson, 1st Baronet (23 November 1808[1] – 8 November 1903)was an English-Australian politician, university founder, explorer, pastoralist, antiquarian and philanthropist. The Nicholson Museum at the University of Sydney is named after him. Member of the Athenaeum Club from 1868 Associate of Society for Psychical Research 1884 Born Cockermouth, Cumberland; died Totteridge. Was in Australia 1834-62. Much involved in politics and in the founding of Sydney University of which he was Chancellor 1854-62. Knighted 1852-first Australian baronet 1859 Honorary degrees from Oxford, Cambridge and Edinburgh. Interested in Egyptian and classical antiquities.

+ESL Auditor 63<br />invited to become VICE PRESIDENT ASL 1863 Proposed, Mr Mackie, seconded, Mr Bollaert<br />death noted in report of the council for 1903: Sir CHARLES NICHOLSON, D.C.L., LL.D., the oldest baronet in the Kingdom, died on November 8th, shortly before his ninety-fifth birthday. He was educated at Edinburgh University, where he took his degree of M.D. in 1853. In 1854 he emigrated to New South Wales, in the first Legislative Council of which he represented Port Philip, later rising to the position of Speaker, which he held for eleven years. In 1858 he became a Fellow of the Ethnological Society, and, after the formation of the Anthropological Institute, he was a contributor to the Journal. Among his other works were various official papers and reports, besides articles which appeared in the Transactions of the Royal Society of Literature, of which Society he was Vice-President.
